Seeing – Hearing – Doing – What Kind of Learner Are You?

What kind of learner are you, and why is it important to know?

Hi, it’s me, Alina. When I was in school, I had a very difficult time with math – mainly because I could not see the numbers in my head. It was very frustrating. I felt like my brain did not work the same as others. This fact had me down for a long time.

People learn in different ways – hearing, seeing or doing. All of us can learn using all three ways, but most of us have one method that helps us remember best. So, how do you learn?

Visual – You learn by seeing

Auditory – You learn by hearing

Kinesthetic – You learn by doing

I was really frustrated in math, because I didn’t know my learning style. Then I took a Learner Style Survey. It turns out that I am a visual / kinesthetic learner. Basically that means that I learn best by seeing and doing. So in math, I used a number line – seeing, and yes, I counted on my fingers – doing. (Hey – whatever works!)

If you are a Visual Learner, you will learn best if you can see it. You love images, posters, charts, videos, diagrams, etc., and you like to take notes to help you remember.

If you are an Auditory Learner, you learn best by listening. You love a good discussion, and listening to interesting stories to help you remember.

If you are a Kinesthetic Learner you need to use all of your senses. You prefer a hands-on approach to help you remember.

So, How do you learn best?

Take the VARK Learning Style Questionnaire to see how you learn best. . Then use the method that works best for you. Learning will be easier and you will remember what you have learned if you use your learning strengths.

Knowing my learning style helped me earn great grades in school. That, and the fact that I went to Whitmore School, where there is no pressure to complete lessons on a set schedule. They don’t have any semesters and that meant that I could take my time in math, and fly through English. And, I never had to stress about chapter tests ever again.
