How Does Virtual School Actually Work?
Written by Rachel Y.
So you’re thinking about virtual school? Whether you are the student or the parent, I am sure you have lots of questions – How does it all actually work? How do students complete schoolwork at home and be successful? Is it even possible?
Well, first let me start off by saying yes, it is ABSOLUTELY possible. As a Guidance Counselor at Whitmore School I see students from all walks of life find their stride and be successful in a virtual school. Here’s how they do it. You can too!
- Create the setting. No, this does not have to be a traditional student desk with pencil and paper and a calculator glaring back at you. Create a setting that is going to be comfortable, motivating and distraction-free. Perhaps, that is a space with lamps instead of overhead lighting. Maybe it’s finding a smooth jazz or piano radio station playing, maybe it’s no music at all. Maybe you might be motivated to work near a window and see nature around you. Whatever it may be, do what works best for you! Stay away from distractions, such as having a TV near your work space, loud noises or your cell phone. Really – put your phone in another room!
- Have a good support system. Your family, friends and neighbors are all very important to you, I am sure. Tell them about going to school from home and your goal of graduating. They can be a support system for you and provide motivation and encouragement.
- Reach out. Reach out for help if you need it. Yes, we want you to be independent and work hard, but we also want you to know when to ask for help. If you are struggling in a particular subject, let your teacher know. We are all here to help you succeed and sometimes the best thing you can do to succeed is to know when you have reached a roadblock and need assistance.
- Believe in yourself. After all, you write your own success. We are all here to help – the faculty, staff, family and friends. However, you are ultimately responsible for your success.
Dream boldly so that you can reach those small and big goals. Promote positive self-talk within yourself. Breathe in and out. Take a look in the mirror and know you are destined for greatness.
You can do it! We believe in you!
