5 TIPs for Managing Stress

Stuck on a lesson, the Internet is down, your little brother is being so loud? AHG!! Feeling stressed out?
Stress can occur when the demands on your life increase. Your body’s normal reaction is to increase your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing. Your muscles become tense. This “fight or flight” reaction is helpful or even vital if you are in danger, but how can you learn to cope with everyday pressures that lead to stress?
Know your stress triggers.
You get angry or cry over nothing, you lash out at your little sister and then feel badly, your stomach is churning, you are not sleeping well. You are stressed- out! Is it a particular subject, are you starting something new, feeling disorganized, struggling to get along with siblings? Fortunately, there are some easy ways to reduce your stress.
- Take a slow, deep breath. Simple –this really works. And, laugh! Yes, this works too.
- Get control of your time – make a to-do list each day and prioritize it. Tackle the tough stuff first. Then enjoy the feeling when you can scratch out the hard stuff from your list. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t complete the whole list. Just be sure to add these tasks to tomorrow’s list.
- Big project? Break it up into smaller chunks. You won’t feel so intimidated to get started, and you will fee accomplished with each chunk you complete.
- Shut out negative thoughts with positive self-speak. Tell yourself, “You got this,” “You have done this before,” “You’re ready for this,” or Nike’s slogan “Just Do It!”
- Get a fresh perspective. Sometimes you can’t see the big picture because you are already stressed- out. Talk it out with a parent, friend, coach or counselor. Sometimes seeing another side of the problem can help you find a solution to resolve it.
